Cariann is a writer from North Carolina. She founded the anonymous submission platform Midnight Woman and the online interview series l’Odet.
I earned my yellow brick from the FBI’s Youth Leadership Program in 2011 and my BFA in creative writing from university in 2017. I am currently querying my debut novel Hurricane Baby and have three other novels in progress.
In 2018, I created an anonymous submission platform called Midnight Woman to create a safe space for people to share personal experiences online. It still exists as a time capsule of survivor stories. In 2019, I created the editorial counterpart, l’Odet, an online series of interviews with notable guests. Through that, I have interviewed founders, musicians, and actors — always with the goal of humanizing entertainment journalism. I was featured in Time Out in 2020 for my work on both projects.
l’Odet
2019 – present
I originally created l’Odet as the editorial counterpart to Midnight Woman — a way to talk to special guests about their lives and philosophies. Where Midnight Woman was anonymous, l’Odet was named. In recent years, it has grown to be it’s own editorial entity, separate from Midnight Woman, but still rooted in the same mission. I’ve had the opportunity to have intentional and open conversations with musicians, actors, and founders. Each interview is conducted and organized by me, and always accompanied by personal portraits that fit the guest. Notable interviews include Sharon Van Etten, Hayley Williams, Jack Mulhern, Holly Humberstone, Meg Donnelly, and Michael Provost. Collaborators for this project include the lovely design work of Madeline Westfall and the editing expertise of Kassidy Ringo. Frequent photographic collaborators include Davy Kesey, Alexandra Arnold, and Dimitri Tzoytzoyrakos.
Midnight Woman
2018 – present
Midnight Woman was born out of the #MeToo movement. I wanted a place to share my own harassment story safely and anonymously, so that I might connect with other people who have survived similar things. It grew into a platform of over 100 anonymous submissions that cover a range of topics including assault, abuse, addiction, self-realization, and daily struggles. In 2019, I hosted two panels at Hayley Williams’ Sanctuary of Self-Love at Bonnaroo Music Festival about sexual assault and the importance of survivor stories with my collaborators and the Nashville Sexual Assault Center. In 2021, in collaboration with designer Madeline Westfall, we introduced a color gradient system, created thoughtfully through color theory research. Each anonymous submission was paired with a custom color gradient that directly correlated to the subject matter of the submission — a new way of offering trigger warnings to readers. The platform is still online with over 100 stories to read. In the future, I hope to develop Midnight Woman into an educational resource for creating dialogue around difficult subjects.
